











William Belcher (B.1923) - Abstract
William Belcher is a British painter, illustrator, and creator of mixed-media constructions. After serving in the British Army during World War II, he studied at Worthing School of Art and the Royal College of Art, where he trained as a textile designer and won a travelling bursary. In the 1950s and ’60s, he and his wife, fellow artist Colleen Farr, collaborated on designs for fabrics, tapestries, and other applied arts. Belcher went on to establish a varied career as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist, contributing to Punch, Oldie, Radio Times, and other major publications. His later work in mixed media—including box constructions—was featured in a solo exhibition at England & Co. in 1991. His paintings are known for their formal clarity and quiet wit.
